SpinalSyn - anyone tried it?

Keep coming across this back pain device called SpinalSyn lately and ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole reading about it. The more I read, the more interesting it seems, but I'm not sure how much of it is just marketing.

Anyone here actually using one? Would love to hear if it's helped your back at all.

Yeah I have one. Those things actually work. I finished the 8 weeks a few months back and my back is still doing great. I only get it out once in a while now, haven't really needed it much. Using it every day can be a bit annoying though.

That's encouraging to hear. How long did it take before you started noticing a difference?

      6

I'd say around 2 or 3 weeks before I really noticed anything. Was pretty gradual at first. By the end of the 8 weeks it was a completely dif...

What was annoying about using it every day? The setup or just having to remember to do it?

        5

Mostly just having to put it on every day. Once it's on it's fine, but some days you just don't feel like bothering with it. Got used to it...

Interesting. Were you doing anything else for your back during those 8 weeks? PT, exercises, anything like that?

Didn't work for me. Tried it for a little over a week and felt absolutely no difference in my back. Didn't like the electrical pulses either, and having to strap the whole thing on every day was annoying. Ended up returning it. Definitely not something I'd try again.

Was the electrical stimulation painful or just uncomfortable?

          5

Not exactly painful, just a really strange sensation. Couldn't get used to it. I know some people don't mind that sort of thing but I defini...

A little over a week seems pretty short considering they say it's an 8-week program.

            4

Maybe, but I wasn't going to spend another 7 weeks doing something I didn't like when I wasn't seeing any results.

How was the return process? Any issues getting your money back?

My therapist recommended trying SpinalSyn alongside the exercises he'd given me.
My back's got a lot better since then, but I've also been more consistent with the exercises and changed my routine quite a bit. Since I did it all together, I can't really say how much the device helped. Whatever the combination is, it's working for me.
Just don't let having the device become an excuse to skip the exercises. You still have to put the work in.

Interesting. What did you change about your routine?

              4

Mostly being more consistent with the exercises, doing more walking and taking breaks from sitting. Before I'd do PT for a couple weeks, fee...

Honestly being consistent with PT probably made a huge difference on its own.

                5

Could be. I've wondered the same thing. But I was doing some of these exercises before and never felt this much improvement, so who knows.

Did your physical therapist recommend SpinalSyn or did you decide to try it yourself?

I've got one and I love it. I was pretty skeptical, but my wife talked me into giving it a go, and boy am I glad she did. My back feels stronger and I've got way less pain now. I'd say it's worth a try.

When you say stronger, do you actually feel your muscles working differently or is it more that the pain is gone?

                  5

Bit of both I guess. My back used to get tired really quickly, especially sitting at my desk all day. Now it just doesn't seem to bother me...

Interesting you mention sitting. That's when my back is at its worst. How long have you been using it?

                    4

About 5 months now. Did the daily sessions for the first 8 weeks. Don't use it nearly as often anymore.

Did you notice any change in your posture or just that sitting became more comfortable?

Just keep in mind that strengthening the muscles around your spine isn't going to magically fix a herniated disc. Might help with symptoms though.

                      6

Yeah that's kind of what I'm wondering. Not expecting it to fix the disc, just hoping it might help with the pain and stiffness.

Is your pain mostly in your lower back or does it go down your leg too?

I haven't tried it but honestly I don't see the point. Yes, building your core muscles is important for back health, but that's what exercise is for. You can't just strap something to your back for 10 minutes and expect it to replace actually strengthening those muscles. Find a decent PT and work on your core. There's no shortcut to that.

I mean, exercise is obviously important but that doesn't mean something like this can't help too. Have you actually looked into how it works?
