I'm working toward a first 10K and can comfortably run five kilometers now. The plans I find keep expanding the weekend long run until it takes over the day. I want to finish the race, not organize my life around one workout. Would three shorter weekday runs plus a gradually longer weekend run be enough if progress is gentle, or is there a smarter way to spread the distance?
Training for a first 10K without making the long run dominate the weekend

True, though I’d still keep one slightly longer run if the goal is just finishing. It helps with confidence on race day.

That was my experience too. The plan worked best when I treated the long run like one piece of the week, not the whole identity of the week.

Yes, three shorter runs plus one long run is enough for a first 10K if you build slowly. The long run doesn’t need to take over the weekend; it just needs to grow from “comfortable” to “longer than the race.”
I’d keep the long run modest and use one of the other runs for a little steady pace work. That spreads the load without making Saturday feel like a project.
